Biographical information

1940

born as Ernest Levi Tsoloane Cole in Eersterust, Pretoria, South Africa

1958

applies for a job with Drum magazine and gets employed as an assistant to Jürgen Schadeberg

1960s

starts to freelance for clients such as Drum, the Rand Daily Mail, The World and the Sunday Express as South Africa’s first black freelance photographer

1966

leaves South Africa and moves to New York City, USA

1967

publishes the book "House of Bondage", which leads to the apartheid regime banning him in perpetuity

1990

dies in New York City, USA
